Sbme Jive Artist R. Kelly Tp-2 Com Soul R & B Product Type Compact Disc Domestic Country Usa Review

Track Title. 1 Tp-2. 2 Strip For You. 3 R&B Thug. 4 The Greatest Sex. 5 I Don't Mean It. 6 Just Like That. 7 Like A Real Freak. 8 Fiesta. 9 Don't You Say No. 10 The Real R. Kelly. 11 One Me. 12 I Wish. 13 A Woman's Threat. 14 I Decided. 15 I Mean (I Don't Mean It). 16 I Wish - Remix (To The Homies That We Lost). 17 All I Really Want. 18 Feelin' On Yo Booty. 19 The Storm Is Over Now. R. Kelly tames his ambitions a bit on TP-2.Com, assembling a simple sequel to his classic 12 Play album from 1993 rather than another epic venture like his double-disc, all-bases-covered R. album from 1998. The straightforwardness is somewhat of a welcome endeavor. As breathtaking as had been R. -- an album that straddled the huge gap between the sort of radio pop associated with Celine Dion as well as the street rap of Jay-Z and Nas -- it also seemed too overblown at times, as if Kelly had something to prove during an era of double-disc epic rap albums. So to see him return to the simple singles approach of 12 Play is refreshing, particularly since he has plenty of singles to work with here, just as he had with TP-1. Kelly furthermore unleashes his singles -- "I Wish," a mass-appeal vocal pop number with an urban edge; "Fiesta," a Latin Invasion cash-in that aims for the dancefloor; and "Feelin' on Yo Booty," a whispery come-on for all the weak-kneed ladies and some of the mindful ones too -- with tailor-made remixes to ensure himself broad airplay. Only one of those remixes is here though, the "I Wish" one, so take heed. There's no Jay-Z-featuring remix of "Fiesta" and no up-tempo one of "Feelin' on Yo Booty," yet TP-2.Com is a strong album nonetheless, three steps ahead of practically every other non-rap urban album from 2000. It does seem like Kelly is coasting a bit here at times, though, particularly when you hold TP-2.Com up against its massive predecessor, but even when R's lounging, he's generally ahead of the pack. Track Title. 1 Manifesto. 2 Trash. 3 Angel Eyes. 4 Still Falls The Rain. 5 Stronger Through The Years. 6 Ain't That So. 7 My Little Girl. 8 Dance Away. 9 Cry, Cry, Cry. 10 Spin Me Round. Returning to action after four years of solo projects, Roxy Music redefined its sound and agenda on Manifesto. More than ever, Roxy sounds like Bryan Ferry's backing band, as the group strips away its art rock influences, edits out the instrumental interludes in favor of concise pop songs, and adds layers of stylish disco rhythms. Although the songwriting is distressingly inconsistent, there are a number of wonderful moments on the record, particularly in the sighing "Angel Eyes" and the heartbroken "Dance Away." Still, trading sonic adventure for lush, accessible disco-pop isn't entirely satisfactory, even if it is momentarily seductive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide. Read more...

A revelation upon its release, this album is now a collection of standards: "Illegal Smile," "Hello in There," "Sam Stone," "Donald and Lydia," and, of course, "Angel from Montgomery." Prine's music, a mixture of folk, rock, and country, is deceptively simple, like his pointed lyrics, and his easy vocal style adds a humorous edge that makes otherwise funny jokes downright hilarious. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide. This EP by Swedish grindcore/death metal band General Surgery has been expanded from 15 minutes to 21 with the inclusion of three alternate takes, and remastering to no great effect. It still sounds like what it is: a basement recording by a band possessed of more enthusiasm than instrumental skill. The introductory instrumental, the 3:12 "Ominous Lamentation," is very nearly the longest track on the disc (only "Crimson Concerto," at an epic 3:30, is longer); most other tracks come in between 30 seconds (the grindcore-ish "An Orgy of Flying Limbs and Gore"), and two-and-a-half minutes, propelled by blastbeats and roaring, distorted guitars. The vocals are a mixture of inhuman roars and growls with occasional high-low dichotomies in the manner of early Carcass; a guttural rumble is balanced by a high-pitched screech. Read more...

Track Title. 1 The Girl From Baltimore. 2 Cold, Cold Shoes. 3 Feel The Heat. 4 Play With Fire. 5 The Theme From The Vindicators. 6 The Dreg (Fleshtone-77). 7 I Ve Gotta Change My Life. 8 Stop Fooling Around. 9 Hope Come Back. 10 The World Has Changed. 11 R-I-G-H-T-S. 12 Let S See The Sun. 13 Shadow Line. 14 Chinese Kitchen. 15 Ride Your Pony. 16 Roman Gods. 17 Kingsmen Medley: Trouble / Haunted Castle / Twelve Months Later. 18 Hope Come Back. 19 B.Y.O.B. 20 One More Time. 21 The Dreg. 22 Extended Super Rock Medley: Stop Fooling Around / Theme From The Vindi. 23 When The Night Falls. 24 Wind Out. 25 La La La La Reprise. While much of the Fleshtones' back catalog has been collecting dust for decades in the United States, the rock & roll archivists at Australia's Raven Records have thankfully stepped up and begun reissuing the cream of the band's early output for I.R.S. Records, first with the excellent compilation It's Super Rock Time!: The I.R.S. Years 1980-1985, followed by a two-fer CD featuring the albums Hexbreaker! and Speed Connection: Live in Paris 85 in their entirety. Raven now completes the job with a third CD that features the band's first EP, the five-song Up-Front from 1980, and their first full-length album, 1982's Roman Gods. Giving Roman Gods a CD reissue may seem less than essential for some fans, since ten of its eleven songs appeared on It's Super Rock Tim, but hearing the album in its proper sequence bears out that it's still one of the Fleshtones' very best albums, and the best songs on the set, "I've Gotta Change My Life," "Shadow-Line," "R-I-G-H-T-S," and "Let's See the Sun," show these guys were arguably the smartest and most stylistically eclectic act to emerge from the '80s garage rock revival. Track Title. 1 All Night Long. 2 Pictured Life. 3 Backstage Queen. 4 In Trance. 5 We'll Burn The Sky. 6 Suspender Love. 7 In Search Of The Peace Of Mind. 8 Fly To The Rainbow. 9 He's A Woman, She's A Man. 10 Speedy's Coming. 11 Top Of The Bill. 12 Hound Dog. 13 Long Tall Sally. 14 Steamrock Fever. 15 Dark Lady. 16 Kojo No Tsuki. 17 Robot Man. If you played in a hard rock band during the '70s, what were you likely to be doing circa 1978? Why, recording a live album, of course. Preferably a double vinyl set, and in Japan to boot. The Scorpions were no exception, and in fact, their Tokyo Tapes were captured only days after Cheap Trick's At Budokan in April 1978. Though hardly as inspired or successful, the Tokyo Tapes set still serves as an ideal greatest-hits collection of the Scorpions' first decade. This recording also showcases the spectacular playing (and occasionally, the dreadful singing) of guitarist Uli Jon Roth, who would soon leave the band for a misguided solo career, but displays some jaw-dropping technique here, most notably on the epic "We'll Burn the Sky" The rest of the band also puts in competent performances on such early standards as "In Trance," "Fly to the Rainbow," and "Speedy's Coming" The material on disc one is consistently strong, and though a number of pointless covers ("Houng Dog," "Long Tall Sally") and that most dreaded concert spectacle -- the drum solo -- break the flow on disc two, the band still closes strong with the crowd-pleasing Japanese folk song "Kojo No Tsuki" and frenetic versions of "Dark Lady" and "Robot Man" Ultimately, if you have any curiosity about the Scorpions' early material, Tokyo Tapes provides the perfect introduction. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi. Track Title. 1 Fool For Your Loving. 2 Sweet Talker. 3 Ready An' Willing. 4 Carry Your Load. 5 Blindman. 6 Ain't Gonna Cry No More. 7 Love Man. 8 Black And Blue. 9 She's A Woman. 10 Love For Sale - Previously Unreleased - Bonus Track. 11 Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City - Live At The Reading Festival '79 - Bonus Track. 12 Mistreated - Live At The Reading Festival '79 - Bonus Track. 13 Lovehunter - Live At The Reading Festival '79 - Bonus Track. 14 Breakdown - Live At The Reading Festival '79 - Bonus Track. Despite benefiting from the expert assistance of legendary producer Martin Birch (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, later Iron Maiden) Whitesnake's early studio albums all tended to sound unexplainably flat. Their fourth effort, 1980's Ready an' Willing, was no exception, but it did make up for this somewhat with solid songwriting. In fact, David Coverdale and company were growing increasingly more consistent and self-assured with each record, and this album's first half shows great progress over the previous year's hit-and-miss Lovehunter. Opener "Fool for Your Lovin'" was their best single yet, as well as their highest charting; with its clever combination of hit-savvy chorus and authentic bluesy resignation, it set the template for subsequent triumphs, and the fact that Coverdale re-recorded it (in disappointing pop-metal fashion) over a decade later for 1989's Slip of the Tongue is a testament to its staying power. Further highlights include the live favorite "Sweet Talker" (given extra bite by Micky Moody's expert slide guitar), the groove monster of a title track, and a set of memorable ballads in "Blindman" and "Ain't Gonna Cry No More." The same laurels can't be awarded to the album's closing trio of songs, all of which evince the tired and formulaic blues-rock that had dominated previous releases. Read more...

There have been plenty of Guess Who collections on the market, from the original Best of the Guess Who to the multi-disc Track Record. Of all of these, the best is the 1999 collection Greatest Hits, which contains a generous 18 songs, including all but two of their charting American singles -- not counting 1965's "Shakin' All Over," the missing songs are "Broken" (the B-side to "Albert Flasher") and "Runnin' Back to Saskatoon" (which barely scraped the charts). Although the Guess Who's albums are distinctive (more so than their reputation would lead you to believe), there's little question that they're best heard as a singles band, and this is the best place to hear them that way. After a spin of Greatest Hits, it's clear that the Guess Who made some of the best mainstream rock of their era -- and while they never received much critical respect (apart from iconoclast Lester Bangs, of course), their music holds up better than much of their peers', which means that the Guess Who deserves to have the last laugh. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide. New Slumberland Crystal Stilts In Love With Oblivion Product Type Compact Disc Rock Pop Country Usa

New Slumberland Crystal Stilts In Love With Oblivion Product Type Compact Disc Rock Pop Country Usa Review

Country: USA. Label: Slumberland ( SLUM ). Product Type: Compact Disc. On their debut, Alight of Night, Crystal Stilts concocted an instantly recognizable noise pop meets '60s psych sound built around fuzzy guitars, swirling organ, huge amounts of reverb, and Brad Hargett s vocals, which are deadpan to the point of wanting to check for his vital signs. For the follow-up, In Love with Oblivion, the band wisely decided not to change much. Apart from Hargett and guitarist JB Townsend getting the rest of the band (bassist Andy Adler, organist Kyle Forester, and drummer Keegan Cooke) into the studio this time, really the only difference is in the details. They introduce some boogie beats (most notably on the buoyant "Through the Floor"), some jangle, and a little more energy overall to give the sound some kick. Also, where Alight felt kind of claustrophobic and insular at times, here the sound is much warmer and expansive. It could be down to the heavier role the keyboards play in the arrangements, but it s also likely that the band felt more comfortable in the studio. Whatever the reason, it s a great-sounding record. There s a lighter, happier feel throughout as well. Most of the songs breeze by at elevated tempos, chiming sweetly ("Silver Sun") or pounding furiously ("Shake the Shackles"). A few times the band even sounds a little woozily giddy, as on "Half a Moon," which sounds like the best song on a Pebbles comp, or the oddly danceable "Precarious Stair." A couple of songs give in to the underlying gloom beneath the surface; the long "Alien Rivers" is the most Opal-like, with Hargett's vocals sounding more disembodied than usual. Read more...

Vastly influential guitarist Michael Schenker leads his band through another set of dependable rockers on MSG, the group's sophomore outing. Although the Michael Schenker Group's sound doesn't offer much variation on the formula developed by Schenker's former band, UFO, it hardly matters; the guitar playing is killer, as always. Schenker's fluid technical facility and impeccable tone maintain top billing throughout. Capable singer Gary Barden also helps to distinguish tracks like "On and On" and "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" with memorable melodies, while standard fare such as "Are You Ready to Rock" predictably doesn't deliver many surprises. Also features a bizarre cameo from Stephen Stills. ~ Andy Hinds, All Music Guide. Read more...

Track Title. 1 On The Corner/New York Girl/Thinking Of One Thing And Doing Another. 2 Black Satin. 3 One And One. 4 Helen Butte/Mr. Freedom X. Could there be any more confrontational sound in Miles Davis' vast catalog than the distorted guitars and tinny double-timing drums reacting to a two-note bass riff funking it up on the first track from On the Corner? Before the trumpet even enters the picture, the story has been broken off somewhere in the middle, with deep street music melding with a secret language held within the band and those who can actually hear this music -- certainly not the majority of Miles' fan base built up over the past 25 years. They heard this as a huge "fck you." Miles just shrugged and told them it wasn't personal, but they could take it that way if they wanted to, and he blew on his trumpet. Here are killer groove riffs that barely hold on as bleating trumpet and soprano sax lines (courtesy of Dave Liebman on track one) interact with John McLaughlin's distortion-box frenzy. Michael Henderson's bass keeps the basic so basic it hypnotizes; keyboards slowly enter the picture, a pair of them handled by Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, as well as Ivory Williams' synthesizer. Finally, Colin Walcott jumps in with an electric sitar and there are no less than five drummers -- three kits (Al Foster, Billy Hart, and Jack DeJohnette), a tabla player, and Mtume. It's a four-tune suite, "On the Corner" is, but the separations hardly matter, just the shifts in groove that alter the time/space continuum. After 20 minutes, the set feels over and a form of Miles' strange lyricism returns in "Black Satin." Though a tabla kicks the tune off, there's a recognizable eight-note melody that runs throughout. Carlos Garnett and Bennie Maupin replace Liebman, Dave Creamer replaces McLaughlin, and the groove rides a bit easier -- except for those hand bells shimmering in the background off the beat just enough to make the squares crazy. Track Title. 1 Livin' Inside Your Love. 2 Hey Girl. 3 Nassau Day. 4 Soulful Strut. 5 Prelude To Fall. 6 A Change Is Gonna Come. 7 Love Ballad. 8 You're Never Too Far From Me. 9 Love Is A Hurtin' Thing. 10 Welcome To My World. 11 Before You Go. 12 Unchained Melody. The success of Weekend in L.A. no doubt prompted producer Tommy LiPuma and Warner Bros. to give George Benson another double album (now on one CD) -- and this, like its three Warner predecessors, also went Top Ten. It is also, alas, slicker, more romantic in mood, and more bound by perceptions of formula than the others, fussed over in three different studios in earnest search of another hit single (the dance-tempo cover of L.T.D.'s "Love Ballad"). Most of the touring band, including Ronnie Foster, Ralph MacDonald and Phil Upchurch, is back, and Claus Ogerman's soft symphonic touch provides most of the backdrops, with Mike Mainieri supplying the orchestra on three tracks. Even at this point, the great guitarist is still given much room to burn -- the balance between instrumentals and vocals remains close -- and Benson comes up with some tasty stuff when the rhythm section pushes him on "Nassau Day" and "You're Never Too Far from Me." Ultimately there is just enough jazz content amid the velvet soul to keep guitar buffs interested. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide. Read more...

Track Title. 1 North Sea Oil. 2 Orion. 3 Home. 4 Dark Ages. 5 Warm Sporran. 6 Something's On The Move. 7 Old Ghosts. 8 Dun Ringill. 9 Flying Dutchman. 10 Elegy. 11 A Stitch In Time. 12 Crossword. 13 Kelpie. 14 King Henry's Madrigal. Stormwatch, Jethro Tull's 12th studio album, found lead singer/songwriter Ian Anderson (who also played flute as usual, while on most tracks adding bass guitar for the ailing John Glascock) bewailing the greedy, anti-environmental tilt of contemporary governments and corporations, and sternly warning of dire consequences to come. Anderson began with a specific topical concern, the British government's decision to develop the North Sea oil reserves off Scotland, in the opening song, "North Sea Oil." Later songs were more general and poetic, but he carried the theme throughout, celebrating the qualities of nature ("Orion") and home ("Home") before predicting a return to the "Dark Ages." The album's narrator clearly located himself in Scotland, from which he both celebrated ancient traditions and deplored modern trends. These views were set to typical Jethro Tull music, the sort of madrigal folk-rock Anderson and company had been playing for years, and the familiarity of the sound, along with the cranky sentiments, may have contributed to the album's turning out to be a holding action commercially; despite respectable showings in the Top 30, it placed lower in the U.K. and U.S. charts than any of the band's albums in ten years, which is to say that it sold to Jethro Tull's existing fan base and no more. Coming at the end of the 1970s, it also marked the end of a phase in the group's career, with only Anderson and guitarist Martin Barre continuing to later lineups. The 2004 reissue adds four previously released tracks of the period (all drawn from the box set 20 Years of Jethro Tull). Read more...

Track Title. 1 Neon Knights. 2 Children Of The Sea. 3 Lady Evil. 4 Heaven And Hell. 5 Wishig Well. 6 Die Young. 7 Walk Away. 8 Lonely Is The World. Many had left Black Sabbath for dead at the dawn of the '80s, and with good reason -- the band's last few albums were not even close to their early classics, and original singer Ozzy Osbourne had just split from the band. But the Sabs had found a worthy replacement in former Elf and Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio, and bounced back to issue their finest album since the early '70s, 1980's Heaven and Hell. The band sounds reborn and re-energized throughout. Several tracks easily rank among Sabbath's all-time best, such as the vicious album opener, "Neon Knights," the moody, mid-paced epic "Children of the Sea," and the title track, which features one of Tony Iommi 's best guitar riffs. With Heaven and Hell, Black Sabbath were obviously back in business. Unfortunately, the Dio-led version of the band would only record one more studio album before splitting up (although Dio would return briefly in the early '90s). One of Sabbath's finest records. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide. Product Type: Compact Disc. Read more...

Track Title. 1 Search For New Land. 2 The Joker. 3 Mr. Kenyatta. 4 Melancholee. 5 Morgan The Pirate. This set (the CD reissue is a duplicate of the original LP) is one of the finest Lee Morgan records. The great trumpeter contributes five challenging compositions ("Search for the New Land," "The Joker," "Mr. Kenyatta," "Melancholee," and "Morgan the Pirate") that deserve to be revived. Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, guitarist Grant Green, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Billy Higgins are all in particularly creative form on the fresh material, and they stretch the boundaries of hard bop (the modern mainstream jazz of the period). The result is a consistently stimulating set that rewards repeated listenings. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide. Read more...
